My beginnings in art making as a young teenager were initially founded in painting and drawing, with my earliest influences rooted in Surrealism---certainly always the unconscious mind. In art school in San Francisco during the mid to late 1970's, exposed to Abstract Expressionism and West Coast Funk, my painting evolved a whimsicality as I explored a bolder use of color. A more abstract space emerged and began to extend out off the page and canvas into 3D space---breaking illusions while conjuring others, increasingly becoming as much sculpture as painting. Ultimately by commencement in 1979, I became the physical embodiment of my artwork from my unconscious mind outward.
